Playdom/Disney Interactive: Lucky Farkle

My Role: UI Manager (hands on)

Led hands on UI/UX design of an early Facebook Flash game called Lucky Farkle, which was a variant of the traditional game Farkle with the look and feel of a Las Vegas dice game, and an innovative cross game title promotional scratcher tickets. The game was built in 3 months time from GDD, to site map, to wireframe ideation, to final art polish and launch.

I had never heard of Farkle, so I began with research and playing a competitor's version of the game. I found the game to be rather rules heavy, lacking in direction and frustrating to inexperienced users that I spoke with on game forums. As a result of their feedback, I developed a short in-game play tutorial, to explain the game rules on the fly as users played through the first hand of the game instead of using traditional pop up help screens which are more intrusive and apt to be closed by users without being read. This hands "on rails" tutorial style quickly became a best practice of Facebook Games.

The scratchers were used to showcase other Playdom Games. When users scored certain dice combinations they would win points and special limited edition items for use in other games, which drove traffic to our other games (free marketing!)
